In essence, it allows you to check both results and progress, making sure things are running smoothly while also continuously improving over time.

LDM is deeply rooted in lean manufacturing principles. These focus on eliminating any waste to improve efficiency and create more value for the customer with fewer resources. In LDM, these philosophies are translated into optimizing processes and maximizing productivity in everyday work.

By incorporating lean management into daily practices, you can keep a pulse on your everyday operations, solving problems as they come up and making sure everyone is aligned with your overall goals. Core Components of Lean Daily Management

There are three key components that are the building blocks for an effective daily management system. These are what keep your business operations running smoothly and ensure the focus stays on continuous improvement: 

1. Leader Standard Work

Leader Standard Work in manufacturing places the spotlight on plant managers. It ensures that they play an active role and have a clear and consistent approach to staying on track. By setting a good example and sticking to defined procedures and best practices on the shop floor, leaders ensure accountability and consistency across their teams. Without this, it’s easy for things to get overlooked and for production priorities to shift unnecessarily.

Essentially, Leader Standard Work requires managers to practice what they preach, showing their team the importance of operational discipline to inspire others to follow suit on the plant floor.

2. Daily Accountability Processes

This principle helps to keep teams in sync so that production lines run smoothly. Under a daily accountability process, every member of staff should be aware of their specific responsibilities on the floor and how they can help address any issues. It makes sure that steps toward progress are being made every single day.

By holding regular shift meetings or daily “stand-ups”, you can make sure that teams stay aligned by going over what is working in production lines and what needs some attention. If there’s an issue or bottleneck, the daily accountability process helps to address this early and take corrective action. It also ensures that each individual is honoring their commitments and implementing actions promptly.

Any insights from these brief team huddles can then be escalated to a higher level (known as “tiered meetings”), where plant managers can use them to inform strategic decisions.

3. Visual Management

Finally, let’s discuss the third component of LDM: visual management. This involves using at-a-glance representations of performance to give a snapshot of how things are going. You can use this to quickly identify issues, compare actual performance with forecasted levels, and find opportunities for improvement. Examples of visual management tools include:

  • Task boards: These visually display ongoing tasks, including their status and importance, to help teams stay organized.
  • Performance metrics: Using graphs or charts to represent performance data helps make complex information easier to understand and to gather actionable insights.
  • Action lists: These visually prioritize tasks by urgency so that everyone knows what needs their attention first, ensuring the most important activities are completed.
  • Andon boards: Using color codes to highlight the status of processes or production can immediately display when an issue occurs. For example, when a red light is shown to signify a problem, an alert is triggered and teams can respond quickly.
  • Lean Visual Management Board: This digital board helps teams keep track of key performance indicators (KPIs). They display important metrics to track progress and create a sense of urgency.
  • Daily Management System Board: This tool helps track progress against daily goals, making it easier to manage tasks, visualize issues, and keep teams on the same page, all in real time. It brings everything together and reinforces daily improvements.

These tools ensure progress and performance is transparent to everyone. As a result, it’s easier for teams to communicate, identify issues, and make decisions.

LDM provides a great framework for improving health and safety in the workplace. Lean daily management transforms workspaces into highly ordered and transparent places, as well as promoting regular check-ins. This enables teams to spot hazards early and standardizes safety practices.

Without consistency, teams often fall into the trap of frequently changing processes. While this can make work feel more varied, it inevitably increases the risk of errors and means output ranges in quality.

LDM prevents this by enforcing standard operating procedures (SOPs), which ensures work is done the same way, every time. Adhering to SOPs minimizes process variation and ensures unchanging high standards as a result.

How to Successfully Implement Lean Daily Management

Implementing LDM isn’t something you can just check off a to-do list. It’s an ongoing, evolving process that takes genuine commitment from everyone in your organization. While the benefits are clear, success often hinges on how you approach it from the beginning.

Don’t Just Check the Box

As mentioned, a common mistake companies make with LDM is treating it like a check-the-box exercise. If the core components of daily management are done just for the sake of doing it, without true purpose or reflection, they quickly lose their impact.  

The same goes for leadership’s involvement. Leaders must be seen to be actively engaged in the process of LDM; otherwise, their teams will think it isn’t a priority. One way to demonstrate this is the Gemba walk, a short but focused visit to the production floor to see work in action, ask questions, and understand challenges first-hand.

Be Clear About the “Why”

We’ve covered the pitfalls, but what’s the secret to successfully implementing LDM? First, training every existing staff member as well as new employees is essential. Everyone must understand the “why” behind daily management, not just what it is. This is an essential step in helping teams to feel empowered by LDM rather than micromanaged.

Be Consistent

Though it may seem cliché, consistency really is key. LDM only works when it’s thoroughly integrated into the everyday workings of your operations. It can’t just be done sporadically. That said, consistency doesn’t mean rigidity. It’s also important that your daily management evolves in line with what’s working or not.
